About EPSG:2056
EPSG:2056 is the CH1903+ / LV95 (Landesvermessung 1995) — an Oblique Mercator projection on the Bessel 1841 ellipsoid (CH1903+ datum) centred on the old observatory in Bern. False easting is 2,600,000 m and false northing 1,200,000 m, deliberately chosen so that LV95 coordinates never collide with the older LV03 (EPSG:21781) values, making the two systems easy to tell apart at a glance.
LV95 became Switzerland's official CRS in 1995 and is the legal CRS for the cadastre, federal mapping (swisstopo) and infrastructure planning. The CH1903+ datum is aligned with ETRS89, so conversion to/from WGS 84 is accurate to a few centimetres without grid shifts.

Frequently asked questions
- What's the difference between EPSG:2056 (LV95) and EPSG:21781 (LV03)?
- LV95 (CH1903+) is the modern realisation aligned with ETRS89; LV03 (CH1903) is the older datum. Coordinates differ by exactly 2,000,000 m east and 1,000,000 m north — a deliberate offset to prevent confusion. swisstopo recommends LV95 for all new work.
