About EPSG:2154
EPSG:2154 is the Réseau Géodésique Français 1993 / Lambert-93 — a Lambert Conformal Conic projection adopted by IGN as the legal CRS of metropolitan France in 2000, replacing the four-zone Lambert Carto system. It uses the GRS 80 ellipsoid with central meridian 3°E, two standard parallels (44°N and 49°N), and false easting/northing of 700,000 m and 6,600,000 m.
RGF93 is aligned with ETRS89 and therefore drifts negligibly relative to ITRF — direct conversion to WGS 84 is accurate to a few centimetres without needing grid shifts. For this reason Lambert-93 is the natural CRS for any spatial work in mainland France, from cadastral data to infrastructure planning.
Common use cases
- All IGN mapping (IGN BD ORTHO, BD TOPO, SCAN 25)
- French cadastre (cadastre.gouv.fr)
- Public datasets on data.gouv.fr
- Civil engineering and urban planning in France

Frequently asked questions
- Should I use Lambert-93 or one of the older Lambert zones?
- For new work always use Lambert-93. The four-zone Lambert Carto system (codes 27561-27564) was the legal CRS only until 2000 and is now retained for legacy compatibility.
- What is the proj4 string for EPSG:2154?
- The proj4 definition for EPSG:2154 is: +proj=lcc +lat_0=46.5 +lon_0=3 +lat_1=49 +lat_2=44 +x_0=700000 +y_0=6600000 +ellps=GRS80 +towgs84=0,0,0,0,0,0,0 +units=m +no_defs +type=crs
- Where is EPSG:2154 used?
- EPSG:2154 (RGF93 v1 / Lambert-93) is defined for the area: France.
