About EPSG:4490

EPSG:4490 is the China Geodetic Coordinate System 2000 (CGCS2000), adopted by the National Administration of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation as China's official geocentric datum on 1 July 2008. CGCS2000 is aligned with ITRF97 at epoch 2000.0 on the CGCS2000 ellipsoid (semi-major 6378137.0 m, 1/f 298.257222101 — essentially identical to GRS 80).

CGCS2000 replaced the older Beijing 1954 (EPSG:4214), Xi'an 1980 (EPSG:4610) and WGS-72-based legacy systems. The matching projected CRSs are CGCS2000 / 3-degree Gauss-Krüger zones (EPSG:4513-4533) for cadastral work and CGCS2000 / Gauss-Krüger 6-degree zones (EPSG:4491-4501) for nationwide mapping.

Common use cases

  • Chinese national surveying and mapping
  • Cadastre and Land Registry across China
  • Provincial GIS infrastructure
  • Regulatory geospatial data exchange in China

Frequently asked questions

Is CGCS2000 the same as WGS 84?
Functionally near-identical — both use essentially the same ellipsoid and are aligned with ITRF. For sub-metre work between Chinese government data and external WGS 84 data, treat them as different and apply the appropriate Helmert transformation if specified.
What is the proj4 string for EPSG:4490?
The proj4 definition for EPSG:4490 is: +proj=longlat +ellps=GRS80 +no_defs +type=crs
Where is EPSG:4490 used?
EPSG:4490 (China Geodetic Coordinate System 2000) is defined for the area: China.
