About converting WGS 84 to WGS 84 / Antarctic Polar Stereographic

Converting from WGS 84 (EPSG:4326) to Antarctic Polar Stereographic (EPSG:3031) is the standard projection for almost every map of Antarctica — the Antarctic Digital Database, BAS, USGS Antarctic Resource, and ice-sheet research datasets.

The projection is true at 71°S, central meridian 0°E. It is conformal, preserving local angles and shape, but distorts area at the periphery. For area-based analysis prefer EPSG:9354 (LAEA Antarctic) or EPSG:6932 (EASE-Grid 2.0 South).

Why people convert EPSG:4326 to EPSG:3031

  • Antarctic Digital Database (ADD) integration
  • British Antarctic Survey and USGS Antarctic mapping
  • Ice-sheet research and remote sensing
  • SCAR and treaty-related Antarctic data products

The same transformation with common GIS tools and libraries:

from pyproj import Transformer

transformer = Transformer.from_crs("EPSG:4326", "EPSG:3031", always_xy=True)
x, y = transformer.transform(-73.9857, 40.7484)
print(x, y)

Frequently asked questions

Why is EPSG:3031 true at 71°S, not the South Pole?
Polar Stereographic is exact only at the latitude of true scale and progressively distorts away from it. Setting it at 71°S balances distortion across the Antarctic continent.
How accurate is converting WGS 84 to WGS 84 / Antarctic Polar Stereographic?
Projection-only conversions are accurate to floating-point precision. If a datum shift is involved, browser-based tools use Helmert parameters which are accurate to roughly 1-5 m; for surveying-grade work apply the official grid-shift transformation in a desktop GIS.
Does my data leave the browser when I use this converter?
No. All coordinate transformations are computed locally in your browser using proj4js. The coordinates you enter are never transmitted to any server.
