About converting WGS 84 to ETRS89-extended / LAEA Europe

Converting from WGS 84 (EPSG:4326) to ETRS89-extended / LAEA Europe (EPSG:3035) is the standard projection for INSPIRE-compliant pan-European thematic data. The Lambert Azimuthal Equal-Area projection preserves area across the continent, making it suitable for population density, land-cover proportions and statistical-map comparison across EU member states.

The conversion involves a small datum shift (WGS 84 → ETRS89, ~60 cm in 2026) and the LAEA projection. For Eurostat, EEA, Corine Land Cover and most pan-EU raster products, LAEA is the canonical CRS.

Why people convert EPSG:4326 to EPSG:3035

  • Eurostat statistical and demographic mapping
  • Corine Land Cover and EEA environmental layers
  • INSPIRE Annex II thematic datasets
  • Pan-European raster harmonisation

Frequently asked questions

Is LAEA Europe the same as Web Mercator?
No — Web Mercator is conformal (preserves angles) but distorts area massively at high latitudes. LAEA Europe is equal-area (preserves area exactly) and is required for any pan-EU statistical comparison.
How accurate is converting WGS 84 to ETRS89-extended / LAEA Europe?
Projection-only conversions are accurate to floating-point precision. If a datum shift is involved, browser-based tools use Helmert parameters which are accurate to roughly 1-5 m; for surveying-grade work apply the official grid-shift transformation in a desktop GIS.
Does my data leave the browser when I use this converter?
No. All coordinate transformations are computed locally in your browser using proj4js. The coordinates you enter are never transmitted to any server.
